Wildlife Garden

Project type

Lawn Conversion to Native Garden

Date

Installed Spring 2021

Location

Santa Clara, Santa Clara County, California

Role

Landscape Designer, Installation Support, and Maintenance Provider

The goal for this backyard lawn conversion was to create an inviting home for wildlife and the clients were happy to report sightings of a variety of birds, butterflies, and bees in the new garden even shortly after installation. Native plants offer rich habitat for wildlife with food, coverage and nesting sites and as the garden grows in the ecological value will only increase.
The design of this garden was influenced by an existing crabapple tree, which offered an ideal setting for a native shade garden featuring oak woodland and forest species. In sunnier areas, native chaparral plants flourish. A dry creek bed with a natural boulder fountain and rain garden adds visual interest and redirects water back into the landscape. Vegetable beds in the side yard provide space for homegrown produce.
